Principal’s Update: Fall 2018

In a blink of an eye, we are already in October!! We have had some wonderful things happening all around our school.  We would like to thank all of our volunteers that helped us with our PTO Sponsored Book Fair!

We have also had two successful Mobile Foodbanks.  We had a special guest, Ms. Amanda Rzepkowski, a Nutrition Educator from the University of Maryland Extension on October the 4th, and she did a demonstration on healthy eating to our Food Bank participates! We welcome her expertise and community partnership! She will begin to do workshops with our third-grade students starting on October 24th.

We also welcome back Dr. Chan and Ms. Sumbrum, 4-H Youth Development Educators from the University of Maryland Extension.  They will be working with our 4th and 6th Graders this year.  This partnership is a continuation from last year, and the program will begin on October 25th.  We appreciate the UMD Extension Programs for your partnerships and support.

Special Message for Grades 6th – 8th Parents,

Please be sure to visit our Educational Resources Tab: http://www.excelacademypcs.org/educational-resources/ to prepare our students for the PSAT 8/9.

Please see the message below from the district website:

All 8th grade students are required to take the PSAT 8/9.

Beginning Fall 2016, the PSAT 8/9 will also be used as part of the entrance criteria for the selection into high school specialty programs: Aerospace and Engineering at DuVal High School; Science and Technology at Charles H. Flowers High School, Oxon Hill High School, and Eleanor Roosevelt High School. By the middle of February students who meet eligibility requirements (based on test scores and academic grades) will be notified and will then be invited to apply to the program of their choice. Notification letters will be sent to student address on file. Parents and students are encouraged to respond as soon as possible upon receipt of the notice of eligibility. Students must follow the designated application procedure to seek enrollment.

Students who take the PSAT 8/9 will receive access to free personalized SAT study. Khan Academy has partnered with the College Board to offer a study plan that is designed specifically for each student based on his/her PSAT scores. With student/parent permission, Khan Academy will use their score results to create a study plan specifically designed for them.

For additional information visit:

PSAT 8/9 is a way to encourage your child to start thinking about life after high school. We have attached some helpful resources related to the SAT Suite of Assessments. If you have any questions regarding this information, please contact Ms. LeKeisha Render, Test Development Specialist at lekeisha.render@pgcps.org

Principal’s Update: Winter 2017

As the Principal of EXCEL Academy, I am both honored and excited to have the opportunity to serve the community of EXCEL. I have met many of your through our community gathering, drop off/pick up, and also through our Meet and Greets and Chat and Chews.

For those of you who do not yet know me, please stop in and say hi! Prior to arriving at EXCEL Academy, I have served entirely in Baltimore City Public Schools for the last ten plus years. I have been a classroom teacher, Reading Specialist, Teacher Mentor, Assessment Coordinator, Resident Principal, and an Assistant Principal. My passion is in the classroom, and I am extremely excited to be part of the EXCEL family. I know that with your help and involvement, our students will be on the path to College and Career Readiness.

At this time, I would like to extend my sincere appreciation to EXCEL’s entire staff. We are in a profession that is centered around students and education, and my staff often goes above and beyond the call of duty. Parents, I am asking you to please shout out teachers and staff that you see who are doing AMAZING things around the building. Every day is “Teacher and Staff Appreciation Day.”

Many wonderful things are constantly occurring at EXCEL Academy. Not only are we offering all four specialty areas to every student (Art, Music, Physical Education, and Computer), we also have a wonderful Band/Chorus program here at EXCEL, directed by our amazing Music Director, Mr. Boysaw. Please look forward to being invited to our Spring Concert, led by Mr. Boysaw and our “Evening at the Gallery,” organized and ran by Mr. Pickett. Mr. Pickett would also like to thank Mr. Boysaw, Mrs. Caulkins, Mr. Fockler, Ms. Curtis, and Ms. Brown for your assistance in previous Evening(s) at the Gallery.

In addition, our PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports) Program is underway. We had our first student celebration in December and we will have more school-wide initiatives to reward our students for demonstrating our SOAR Motto: S stands for Self-Disciplined, O for On Task, A for Achievers, and R for Respectful. Special shout out to Ms. Jiandani and Ms. Philyaw!!

Our second quarter Awards Assembly will be on February 22nd, 2018. If your child earned Honor Roll or Principal’s Roll for quarter two, you are invited to attend. Please look for invitations coming your way!

As always, we are appreciative that you allow us the privilege of serving you and your children.

Educationally,

Chien Nee
Principal
